10 Of The Biggest Lies That Had India Fooled

How many times have you read or been told things that turn out to be false? How many times did we find things to be untrue and were taken aback, because we heard stories and were taught things which said otherwise? Here are 10 lies told in India that each one of us thought to be true.

1. Milkha Singh looked back during the 400m race at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, was never leading in the 400m final of the 1960 Rome Olympics. Yes, he didn’t look back. He was fifth in line and with great effort, secured fourth position.

2. Subhash Chandra Bose died in a plane crash.

The Mukherjee report of 1999 suggests that Bose didn’t die in an air crash in 1945. Even though the court rejected this report, there is no record of a plane crash at the time Bose was believed to be flying. Add to that, no DNA analysis was done on the ashes that are said to be Bose's to prove otherwise.

3. “An eye for an eye would leave the whole world blind” -Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi had a lot of fancy one-liners, the kind that he could've owned Twitter with if he was around in this day and age. But for all his wise quips, this wasn't one of them. Contrary to popular belief, these words were actually said by Ben Kingsley in the movie Gandhi. There is no record of this statement being made by Gandhi in any of his collected works.

5. Hockey is India's national sport.

In an RTI reply, the Sports Ministry has made it clear that it has not declared any sport as the national game whereas the web portal of the government, www.india.gov.in, has posted an article calling hockey India's National Game. 6. Varanasi (Benaras) is the oldest city in the world.

Varanasi is considered the oldest inhabited city of the world.  This isn’t true because there are over 30 cities which were inhabited before Varanasi in 1100 BC. Get your facts right, historians.

7. India has officially been secular since 1947.

The original Indian Constitution never had the term ‘secular’. The constitution was later amended in 1976 adding the term secular to its preamble and other sections. The Supreme Court says India has always been a secular country, but then why didn't we have it in our constitution?

8. Hindi is the only official language of the country.

9. Mahatma Gandhi was photographed dancing at a party.

Fell for it? This isn't Mahatma Gandhi dancing with a lady, it's actually an Australian actor dressed like Gandhi. Gandhi is definitely one role model; we've got actors dressing like him.

10. Ayodhya has existed since the mystical age of the Ramayan.

The modern day town of Ayodhya was set up by King Vikramaditya and didn’t exist during the time period of the Ramayan. It was set up with the aim to recreate its mystic. In fact, there is another town in Thailand by the name of Ayutthaya which holds a similar story to that of the mythology.

Did Mukesh Ambani’s son do a Salman Khan?

Salman and Akash

Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan and Mukesh’s son Akash Ambani. A Mumbai Court sentenced Bollywood superstar Salman Khan to five years in jail in the 2002 hit-and-run case after 13-years of judicial proceeding.

Before the judgement was pronounced, Salman’s driver Ashok Singh in a dramatic appearance claimed he was the one behind the wheel and not Salman Khan when the accident happened, but the judge rejected the statement. The court held Salman guilty of all charges.

Ironically, a rather similar case of a hit-and-run  in 2013 which involved the scion of India’s richest person Mukesh Ambani, took place but was speedily mopped under the carpet. Mukesh ambani’s son Akash was reported to be driving a Rs. 4.5 crore worth Aston Martin Rapide sports car and said to have lost control of the sports car which rammed into an Audi luxury car and then hit a Hyundai Elantra. The eyewitnesses said that a rather bulky driver fled the incident spot.

On that night police took 12 hours to record the statements of the eyewitnesses and at 5.30am an FIR was filed.

On the next day, in the very same way as Ashok did in the case of Salman Khan, Akash’s chauffeur Bansilal Joshi claimed that he was behind the wheel when the accident occurred.
It was late at night at Peddar Road in South Bombay suburb on December 8, 2013. The Aston Martin Rapide car was followed by two security vehicles and traveling through the aforementioned stretch. Suddenly, the driver of the sports car lost control ramming into an Audi which then crossed the road divider then hit a parked Hyundai Elantra. The Hyundai Elantra was owned by Vikram Mishra, a resident of Thane who works at a pharmaceutical firm and Foram Ruparel was the owner of the Audi. After the accident, the driver fled the spot after being escorted by his security detail following him in another car.

Police inspecting the wrecked Aston Martin Rapide car on that night. On the following day,  Foram Ruparel, driver of the Audi, recorded her statement saying that the man at the wheel of the Aston Martin Rapide was a ‘young man’, whose description bears a strong resemblance with Akash Ambani.

But on the next day, a long-time Ambani employee Bansilal Joshi, 55, weighting about 100 kg presented himself at the police incident and claimed that he was driving the car. He also said that he had taken out the Rs 4.5 crore out for “routine maintenance”.
No arrests had been made even after nine days of that incident, although eyewitnesses of the horrific road mishap claim that a young man was seen on the driver’s seat, who, they add, later fled in one of the two tailing SUVs. The car was last seen at a bash organised by Mukesh Ambani in honour of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, at which Akash Ambani was also present.

A Reliance spokesperson had said that the injuries sustained were minor and that the driver was not fleeing the scene but that the impact of the accident was so intense that the car was thrust ahead. The police didn’t arrest Joshi as they weren’t sure if he was indeed the culprit and the CCTV footage at the Cadbury junction also was inconclusive as it did not show the faces of the drivers.

According to media reports Joshi has told the police that he usually chauffeurs Akash, the son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani. He allegedly said that Akash panicked after the accident and jumped into an escort car. Unsubstantiated reports on social media immediately after the Peddar Road incident had hinted at two people losing their lives in the Aston Martin hit-and-run case, but these links and posts were either removed from the websites or led to dead links soon after the news spread, albeit in trickles, giving rise to speculation that Reliance had used its might to suppress any news related to the accident. But no investigations and follow-up was ever made on the incident. And the incident slowly faded away from public memory.

Over the weekend, Ms Ruparel later identified Bansilal Joshi, 55, as the man who was driving the Rs 4.5 crore worth Ashton Martin Rapide when the accident happened. A Reliance spokesperson had also confirmed that the Aston Martin was a ‘family car’ and that Joshi was driving it at the time of the accident, while speaking to Forbes.

Salman Car

Salman Khan’s Land Cruiser that rammed into a bakery in Bandra, killing one person and injuring four. On December 26, 2013, a Mumbai-based newspaper published that owners of two cars smashed by a speeding Aston Martin Rapide owned by industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group have got replacement as compensation. Owners have also informed the police that they are “not interested in pursuing the case any further.” While Ruparel got an identical Audi A6, Mishra received an upgrade in the form of Skoda Superb.

But according to NDTV report, Ruparel told the news channel that she had not been contacted by Reliance Group for any compensation, and the new Audi car was organized through her insurance company. And according to the Economic Times, the insurance companies involved have denied settling either of the claims and said that replacing a damaged car with an upgraded model is out of the question.

Here are the unsolved mysteries in the case:
Police didn’t arrest Bansilal Joshi who claimed that he was behind the wheel because they aren’t sure if Bansilal Joshi was indeed the driver.

Mystery One: Would a chauffeur be followed by two security cars and if police didn’t believe he was the driver then who was driving the car that night?
On that night, the driver lost control and hit Ruparel’s Audi, which then flew over the divider on the road and hit a luxury bus and then collided with  Mishra’s Hyundai.

Mystery Two: Why the chauffeur was not fined even if he had driven the car in that speed.

Reliance didn’t give compensation for the cars, and insurance company also didn’t replace for the damage.

Mystery Three: Who was the mystery person who gave brand new cars as gifts on the occasion of Christmas.

Police officer burned by free coffee sues Starbucks

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A police officer who got a free cup of Starbucks coffee is suing the company for $50,000 after he spilled it and got burned.

WRAL-TV reports attorneys said in court Monday that Raleigh officer Matthew Kohr should be compensated for burns, blisters and emotional damage caused after the officer spilled the coffee in his lap in 2012.

Kohr says in the lawsuit the lid popped off the coffee he ordered at a Raleigh Starbucks and the cup collapsed. Kohr claims the incident caused such severe stress it activated his Crohn’s disease which resulted in surgery to remove part of his intestine.

An attorney representing Starbucks argued in her opening statement Tuesday that it was Kohr who was negligent and that it was his pre-existing condition the caused his problems.

Virat Kohli's New Audi R8 LMX And 9 Other Supercars That Cricketers Own

This list is by no means an authoritative or a final list on sportscars that cricketers own. We were however just a little bit sick of the fact that just about every list of cars Hummers, Ferraris and GT-Rs were mentioned in the same breath. Hell, one list even had a Toyota Camry on it (Gautam Gambhir's)! It's then that we decided to put the Friday evening to good use and set down a constantly growing list of sportscars owned by cricketers. Do send us more pictures/tips on the story if you find any.

1. Virat Kohli's New Audi R8 LMX. Limited to only 99 units, the LMX is powered by a hulking V10 engine and is capable of a top speed of 320 km/h.

2. Sachin Tendulkar's Nissan GT-R. Nicknamed the 'Godzilla' the GT-R's trick launch control system makes it one of the quickest accelerating cars in the supercar world.

Sachin Nissan GTR

3. MS Dhoni's Ferrari 599 GTO. This is only the third time in history that Ferrari has used the GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) moniker on one of its cars. Tells you this V12 powered supercar is something special.

4. Yuvraj Singh's Lamborghini Murcielago. The Italian supercar is a typical old school Lambo that can leave any other car on the road in its wake. That delicious V12 is more than a match for the Ferraris and Astons of the world.

5. Suresh Raina's Porsche Boxster Limited Edition. Probably the sweetest handling Porsche ever built, its flat-six engine is nothing like your traditional powerplants.

6. Shahid Afridi with his Bentley Continental. The two door four seater is a big brute in a suit. A gentlemen racer's supercar, in typical Bentley tradition it can be 'classy and comfortable' or 'fast and brutal' depending on your mood.

7. Shane Warne's Lamborghini Murcielago. Over the years, the supercar spawned a number of variants each one more powerful than the previous one.

8. As a Lamborghini ambassador Warne also has this Gallardo Superleggera. The Superleggera in the name tells you its a light weight version of the supercar which helps the car accelerates even quicker.

9. Oh by the way, he also owns a Bugatti Veyron. One of the most powerful supercars ever produced, the Veyron holds the record of being the fastest car in the world, with a top speed of 431 km/h.

10. Kevin Pietersen has a Lamborghini Gallardo. The odd firing V10 engine is a rev happy monster that will propel this supercar to a 100 km/h in mere 3.4 sec.

21 Cartoons That Show How Smartphones Are Killing Real Conversations

Okay, I’ll admit it. Sometimes I look at Facebook at the table. Just a couple years ago, that thought never would have occurred to me. So I’m guilty of it, but these cartoons kinda made me think twice about the habit.
You see people doing it all the time. Coffee shops, zoos, all sorts of different places – their faces are buried in their smart phones, not engaging with what’s going on around them. These days, someone not glued to the phone is an exception.
Does this technology improve our lives? Definitely! But maybe it’s time to show a little self control.

Enjoy.

June 30 Will Be One Second Longer This Year, and That Could Be a Problem

June 30 Will Be One Second Longer This Year, and That Could Be a Problem

Because Earth's rotation is slowing ever so slightly, we occasionally need to add an extra second to re-sync our super-precise atomic clocks to our planet's rotation. But you know who's not on board with that? Those damn computers, whose operating systems just can't handle it. The last time we added a leap second in 2012, it wreaked havoc across the Internet.

Leap seconds are governed by the Paris-based International Earth Rotation Service, which this week announced its plan to make June 30, 2015 one second longer. This will be the 26th such leap second added since 1972.
In those intervening decades, though, we've become ever more dependent on computers and GPS systems that need to keep exact time—making the task ever more fraught. In 2012, the act of adding a simple second took down Mozilla, Reddit, Foursquare, Yelp, LinkedIn, and StumbleUpon, according to the Telegraph. And yes, Gizmodo was not spared either.

It mostly has to do with NTP, or the Network Time Protocol computers use to sync with atomic clocks. If a computer sees the same second twice in a row, it logically thinks something went very wrong. There are fixes to this, but they've obviously not been implemented across the board.
Apparently, the Telegraph reports, there's been some controversy over whether to keep adding leap seconds. U.S. delegates have argued that "precisely timed money transactions could go astray or vehicles could be sent tens of metres out of position if they are a second out in their measurement of time." It's amazing to think that our world is so interconnected but fragile that a single second could send hiccups rippling through the system.
But, perhaps, more frighteningly, if we don't keep adding leap seconds, the primordial link between our notion of a day and the rotation of the Earth could be forever disrupted.
"Experts also fear that once this link is broken it could never be restored because although the Earth's timekeeping systems are built to accommodate the occasional leap second, adding a leap minute or hour to global time would be virtually impossible."
After all, what is a day? Is it 24 hours exactly? Is it one complete revolution of the Earth? Armed with our super-precise modern instruments, we find ourselves asking basic questions about our world.

This has been a great world cup for us. Its not always about winning, the thing that is more important is the fact that our team has really performed well throughout the world cup campaign and made us proud. Bad games and losses our part of the game, one bad game in the semi-finals shouldn’t get us all disappointed. Hope we will take it back in 2019. Bleed Blue Forever !
